Welcoming Addresses

On behalf of ESPRit,

… I feel honoured and delighted to welcome you to the 9th international conference of the society, organised so beautifully and professionally by the Journallitteratur research group at Ruhr Universität Bochum. Of course, it would have been wonderful — not to say magical — to have been able to meet, discuss, laugh and mingle among the hidden pearls of the German industrial heartlands, but with such a rich, thought-provoking and inspiring programme, I feel confident that the intellectual exchanges will be just as stimulating and the social spirit just as convivial.

Thank you to the organising team, the speakers and everyone attending for your commitment to the field and to the extension of the ESPRit community. I very much look forward to meeting you in June!

Welcoming Address by Andreas Ostendorf

Dear participants of ESPRit 2021 virtual event,

Ruhr University Bochum (RUB) is proud to host the 9th ESPRit conference on Periodical Formats in the Market which is held in close cooperation with the European Society for Periodical Research. The Department of Philology with its Institute of German Studies (18 professorships, more than 3,000 students) has a strong research activity in classic and contemporary literature comprising all different formats. Periodicals represent a very attractive research item as they have always had both a strong societal and economic impact. The research on journal literature as one expression of periodicals is e.g. part of a larger research group together with Philipps University Marburg and University Cologne, funded since 2016 by the German Research Foundation DFG. We are grateful to both, the Research Group on Journal Literature and the DFG for their conference funding for this event. In addition, the RUB Research School with its professional support for doctoral candidates and postdocs has funded the Postgraduate Workshop. The excellent qualification of early-career researchers on all levels is an important part of the DNA of RUB. Conferences like ESPRit 2021 are, therefore, perfect platforms for bringing established and young researchers together, whether it is in the real or the virtual environment.
