About the Conference

The 9th ESPRit Conference is carried out in two distinct phases. In phase 1 (1-13 June 2021) you will have the opportunity to watch and comment the pre-recorded papers of the panels and prepared posters of the postgraduate workshop at your leisure. The comments help to prepare the live Q&A sessions in phase 2.

During the main conference in phase 2 (14-17 June 2021), further live events will bring us together, including the postgraduate workshop (11 June 2021), keynote lectures, ESPRit business meeting, roundtable, plenary panels.

Please register on the conference website, then you will be able to see all pre-recorded presentations, comment and participate in the live sessions. To do this, create a profile by clicking on ‘Log In’ in the top right-hand corner. Click on Signup. A Register page will open. Enter your data there. FirstnameLastname is recommended as your username. Please do not choose a pseudonym so that your comments will be visible as yours. After registration, you will receive an email to inform you, that our admins will activate your account as soon as possible. Please note: You can log in only after your account has been activated by our administrators. This can take up to one day! You will receive a second email to inform you, that your account has been activated.
 In the next step you can edit your profile. If you wish, you can upload a photo of yourself. This is very helpful so that the other participants can see who you are.

Yes, please create an account to join the conference. Make sure you are logged in to see all sections of the conference website and participate in the live sessions.

No, thanks to generous funding from the DFG, the Ruhr-Universität Bochum and the RUB Research School, participation in the conference is free of charge.

After the conference, participants have the opportunity to decide whether their presentation should be made publicly available or deleted from the conference homepage. Each author decides this individually.

About the organisation of the programme

The Postgraduate Workshop, Keynote Lectures, Roundtable, ESPRit Annual Meeting, Plenary Panel and Panel Discussion (Q&A sessions) will take place live. The live panel discussion will be based on the presentations that have been pre-recorded and will be available for viewing and commenting during phase 1 of the conference (1-14 June).

In the conference programme, select the session you wish to attend. On the bottom of the programme item (Keynote lecture / Panel / Roundtable etc.) you will find the zoom link to the live session. Open the link at the time of the event.

From 1 June 2021, the pre-recorded presentations can be viewed and commented on.

To view the pre-recorded presentations, select the panels you are interested in on the ‘Panels’ page. On the panel sub-page all videos of the panel are linked. You can view the presentation in full screen mode by clicking on the square icon at the bottom right.

You are invited to discuss the pre-recorded papers in advance of the live Q&A session by using the comment function at the bottom of the page. Please make sure to indicate which paper you wish to comment on or whether you want to discuss the whole panel.

Yes, it is possible to participate in individual events of the conference. Select the events in the conference programme that are of interest to you and join the Zoom session via the link provided.

It is not recommended to participate in two parallel panels as they are intended for discussion. However, it is possible to switch between panel discussions.

The Lounge is the virtual social meeting place of the conference. Enter to get in touch and stay in touch!

All ESPRit2021 participants have the opportunity to present their latest book publications on the homepage. If you have published on periodical research in 2020 or 2021, let us and the research community know! Just send us the blurb or advertisement, a cover image and, if you want to, a link to the publisher’s site where your book is offered. Please note that we cannot offer discounts or similar within the framework of the conference. The book exhibition is merely an offer for everyone to exchange information about new publications and to comment on them.

About the conference language

Yes, the German-language presentations are provided with English subtitles. Please click on the subtitle button in YouTube to view the translation.

·      There are no subtitles for the pre-recorded English-language videos. The German videos have optional English subtitles.
·      Zoom offers automatic transcription of live sessions, which can be useful for understanding. To start the automatic transcription, click on the CC icon during the current Zoom session. For more information, visit the Zoom Help Centre.

Technical questions

  • All live sessions will be accessible via the video conferencing application Zoom.
  • All pre-recorded talks will be hostes on a private channel on youtube.com. The talks will not be listed in Youtube’s index and will not appear in search results. They can only be accesses via specific URLs that will be embedded on our conference website.

No, you don’t need a Zoom account or a Youtube account to take part in the conference. All you need are the links to the sessions which are available at the conference website.

Please refer to the Zoom Help Center if you have any questions regarding the use or safety of the application.

  • Make sure you have registered on the conference website and are logged in (click the login button at the top right).
  • Make sure that your browser is up to date and that all updates are installed. If you still have problems, use another browser.

About the protection of privacy

No, live discussions will not be recorded

If you don’t want people to see your room in the video background consider to use one of our virtual backgrounds in Zoom. You can download the file at the Helpdesk site.

Download a virtual background from our website in the Helpdesk section. Save the file on your computer. Start Zoom. Click on the drop-down menu by the camera icon. Click on “Select virtual background”. If you click on the + symbol and , you can add a picture. To do this, select the picture file that you downloaded from the conference homepage.
